Needle Recapping Exclusion
Per the provision of the UT Policy document entitled "Safe Handling of Sharp Devices in Research and Teaching Environments," needles may only be recapped under the following 2 circumstances:
If the syringe must be used as the "sample container" or inoculations must be prepared in advance.
Under this circumstance, recapping must be done using a one-handed scoop technique.
If the environmental conditions are such that failure to recap the needle would create a more hazardous situation for personnel or animals present (i.e., animal is poorly restrained, sharps container cannot be placed/maintained within arm's reach).
Under this circumstance, a procedure outlining such circumstances and practices for minimizing the needle stick exposure risk must be prepared and available for inspection in each where the procedure is performed.
